STACKED

An assemblage of found and made pieces stacked into one.
Skills: MIG welding, power and handtools, sketching

Stacked is a piece of contemplation—a gray area between sculpture and design. This piece is an exploration of subtracting bodies and adding others through play and constraint. The irony of removing the wooden legs while keeping the body, yet keeping the metal “leg” and removing its body, is a commentary on disposability.

Before arriving at my final concepts, I did some iterative sketching, focusing mainly on the keywords/features that I have chosen for this project: shape, stacking, and material contrast.

With these features in mind I sketched accordingly and eliminated any sketches that did not inhabit all of these features. The drawings circled are the concepts that I liked the most.

1. Started welding my metal box and attached it to my swivel through bolts and drilled holes
2. For projects like these I enjoy prototyping through working on my final, so turns out I didn’t really like the size of the cube so I re made it smaller
3. Smaller cube!

1. Cut out my wooden circle for my upholstered seat
2. Streched and stapled!
3. Seat attached to my cube through thread and bolt

1. Hand jigsawed out a circle to fit over the upholster seat
2. Sandblasted my metal cube to achieve a similar texture and colour to the swivel
3. Pieces are ready for assembling!

After assemblying the pieces, I found myself feeling something was missing. I tried a variety of other attachments in different ways but that also felt like too much. I walked away from doing anything to this piece for a week and finally decided on adding a sanding down arm rest from a piece of my walker.
